Black History Month Drop-In

A member of our Local History Committee will be staffing a display featuring Black history-focused materials, videos, and photographs. Check out the display or come by for an in-person orientation to Library materials on Black history.

Black History Month Film Screening: Selma
Tuesday, February 3 at 2 p.m. at the Main Branch
The award-winning film follows Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s campaign to secure equal voting rights via an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965.
This is a drop-in program.
Storytime at St. Paul with Chantal Gray
Wednesday, February 4 at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Paul Branch
Chantal Gray, local author of "What's in Your Hair?", will be joining Storytime at St. Paul in celebration of Black History Month! This storytime will feature a special reading of Chantal's book.
This is a drop-in program for children ages 0 - 6.
Author Talk with Antonio Michael Downing
Thursday, February 12 at 6 p.m. at the Main Branch
Join us for an evening with award-winning author and musician Antonio Michael Downing (Saga Boy), as he shares insights from his life and his new book, Black Cherokee.
Downing’s work explores Black identity, belonging, and the transformative power of art. Register for this program through our Event Calendar.
Black History Month Film Screening: Hidden Figures
Tuesday, February 17 at 2 p.m. at the Main Branch
Hidden Figures tells the untold story of Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson – brilliant African-American women working at NASA and serving as the brains behind one of the most significant operations in history – the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.
This is a drop-in program.
Tween Tuesdays with Chantal Gray
Tuesday, February 17 at 6 p.m. at the Main Branch
Chantal Gray, local children's author of "What's in Your Hair," will be joining Tween Tuesday in celebration of Black History Month! Chantal will help kids craft a family tree that celebrates their unique culture.
This is a drop-in program for children ages 9 - 12.
Black History Month: A Community Celebration of Black Wellness and Culture
Thursday, February 19 at 5 p.m. at Main
Join us for an evening of art, lived experience, and community connection as we honour and celebrate Black joy and excellence.
Featuring an art showcase, keynote speaker, creative activities, and light snacks and refreshments. The keynote speaker is Dr. Kathy Hogarth, Associate Vice President, Global Strategy, Wilfrid Laurier University.
5 - 5:30 p.m. - Open House
5:30 - 6:00 p.m. - Keynote address
6:00 p.m - 6:30 p.m. Break for refreshments and connection
