We have the following equipment available to customers:

  • JAWS (Job Access with Speech) screen reading computer and software – 1st floor Main branch
  • Merlin Ultra enhanced vision machine – 1st floor Main branch
  • Self-checkout machines that raise and lower at both branches

Accessible Library Collections

The Brantford Public Library is committed to providing accessible formats of existing library materials such as large print, audio or electronic versions, upon request. When buying new library materials, we consider the accessibility needs of customers and build collections that are accessible to the widest range of people.  Notice of the availability of accessible formats is communicated on the Library’s website.  Accessible formats include:

  • Large Print
  • Ebooks
  • Audiobooks
  • Decodable books
  • Playaway audible readers
  • Books on CD
  • Vox books (Books with built in speakers)

CELA (Centre for Equitable Library Access) Collection

CELA is a national non-profit organization established by Canadian public libraries to serve people with print disabilities. Print disabilities can be the result of low vision or blindness, a reading disability such as dyslexia, or a physical disability such as Multiple Sclerosis which makes holding and reading conventional books a challenge.

Is there a charge for CELA service?

CELA service is available for free to print disabled people with a library card.

How do I register for CELA?

You must have a valid library card to register for CELA. Residents of the Brantford, County of Brant, Six Nations and the City of Cambridge can get a library card for free. Visit our website for more information on joining the Library.

Once you have a library card, you can register yourself for CELA using their self-registration form. If you prefer, Library staff can also register you for CELA.

What formats are offered?

The CELA collection includes audio, braille, and accessible e-text, delivered in both physically and digitally, depending on your preference. Through the CELA collection and an agreement with Bookshare, CELA member libraries can offer free access to more than one million professionally produced titles, with materials in both French and English.

How are items delivered?

CELA’s Direct to Player service allows for easy downloading of titles to apps available on Apple and Android devices and internet-enabled DAISY reading devices. Titles are available for download from the website as well.  You can also have material from CELA delivered to your home by mail.

What devices are compatible?

CELA books and magazines work with many popular Apple and Android accessible reading devices and apps. Go to CELA’s Compatible devices and formats page to discover more about compatible devices and apps you can use.

Does CELA offer help?

CELA staff are available to help customers build their profile or assist in selecting titles. CELA also offers technical support for patrons experiencing difficulty through their toll-free Helpline. contact the CELA Contact Centre at 1-855-655-2273 or email help@celalibrary.ca

BrowseAloud Software

BrowseAloud software provides speech, reading and translation support for website users. This service is available on our website.
