Tween Book Club

We know that keeping children ages 9-12 reading can be a challenge especially during these unprecedented times.

With an unlimited supply of distractions (omg TikTok) how is it even possible to attract kids to reading when they can barely sit down for five minutes to quiet their minds? Luckily we’ve created an online forum for kids to join and discuss with other kids what they’re reading.

Our Tween Book Club is the perfect book group for all reading types: the devoted reader, the casual skimmer and the ones whose mom is forcing them to join because she wants something literary to supplement their online learning.

The book club will feature a variety of titles including Raina Telgemeier’sSmile and  Victoria Schwab’s, City of Ghosts. In addition, there will be an opportunity to chat outside of the featured books with the inclusion of different genre channels. Even if you’re not reading one of our books, join and come talk about what you are reading!

All our featured titles are available in ebook and audiobook format on Overdrive and the online club will be hosted on Slack. A Library programmer will facilitate this online club to ensure that a safe and valuable learning space is maintained.

How the club will run

Sign-up is available through this form. Once we receive your information, we will email an invitation to join this Slack group. You can choose which channels you’d like to participate in once you set up your Slack workspace. Please note that you can always remove yourself from channels if you don’t wish to discuss that book or topic. You control your Slack experience, from channels to notification settings.

What is Slack?

Slack is an online platform that allows groups of people to discuss and share information about a variety of topics. These topics are split up into different “channels”.  Slack can be viewed as a website or mobile app for iOS or Android. Notifications are customizable and there’s a “Snooze Mode” available if you want to set yourself away to sleep or you know, read a book. Check out these videos for more information.
