Hodgson, George Thomas

F/S George Thomas Hodgson, second son of Mr. and Mrs. William Hodgson, R.R. 3, Cainsville, was reported missing after air operations over the Ruhr Valley, Germany, on July 21, 1944. He had a splendid operational record with the 578th R.A.F. Squadron, having completed a large number of sorties against the enemy. And, because he had been with the Squadron for almost a year, he had many friends who deeply mourned him and who paid high tribute to the unselfish sacrifice he made. Some time after his death his body was moved from German soil to Uden, Holland, miles closer to England, the homeland of his parents, where he had many relatives. Born in Vanessa, May 26, 1923, he attended public school in that village and then went on to the Waterford High School. He was employed after his school years by the John McHutchion Limited, Brantford, going home on weekends. He attended Vanessa United Church and took part in the Sunday School activities. Enlisting on October 10, 1942, in the R.C.A.F., F/S Hodgson was trained at Toronto, Angus and Montreal, and received his wings at Mont Joli. After a leave at home, he left for overseas, arriving in England on September 2, 1943.
