Foster, Clarence William Alfred

Cpl. Clarence William Alfred (Pete) Foster was reported missing following the Dieppe raid on August 19, 1942, and because no more definite information could be learned, was later officially presumed dead. One of the first Brantfordites to enlist with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry, Cpl. Foster had been with his unit from September 11, 1939, until the day of his death. Soon after his enlistment he joined the Signallers' Corps and was attached to Headquarters Company. He was moved overseas in July, 1940. Born in Echo Place, April 3, 1914, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Foster, Cpl. Foster received his education at the Echo Place School and graduated from the Brantford Collegiate Institute. While at the latter school, he distinguished himself in athletics, one year capturing the Junior Field-Day Championship. He also played as a drummer in the school orchestra. He carried this last interest into the army and for a time was in the regimental band. He was a member of Wesley United Church. Previous to his enlistment he was employed at Proctor Packers, Limited. His father, a veteran of the First Great War, serving with the Black Watch Regiment, was also active in the second conflict, being a corporal at No. 20 C.I.B.T.C. Cpl. Foster is survived by his widow and three children, Sheila, Donna and Clarence.
