Garner, George Arnold

Pte. George Arnold Garner, 283 Sheridan St., went into the heat of battle, not to kill the foe, but as a stretcher bearer, to save his fellow men from needless death. During the fierce fighting in the Caen sector of France, he saved many, only to lose his own life on July 25, 1944. His wife and three children, George, Beverley and Clifford, had ample evidence of his gallantry in letters of sympathy received from his many friends. Pte. Garner was born in Worcester, Mass., and for a time lived in Cheshire, England. But since 1929 he had resided in Brantford, and he was employed at the Universal Cooler Company of Canada, Limited. He was a member of the Royal Oaks Immanuel Baptist Bible Class and his keenest pleasure was derived from music. He played a violin in the Bible Class orchestra, and was with the First Battalion Dufferin and Haldimand Rifles Band. He was awarded the Canadian Efficiency Medal in April, 1943, for his years of faithful service with the D. and H. Band. He left Canada for overseas in February, 1944, and then was transferred to the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry. At the time of his death, Pte. Garner was 37 years of age.
