Frey, Frederick John A.

P/O Frederick John A. Frey, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl T. Frey, 8 Lewis St., was reported missing after air operations on September 2G, 1944. Later it was learned that his plane crashed outside Cap Gris Nez, near Calais, France, the target, on the night of his death. The R.C.A.F. was helping the Canadian ground forces capture Calais and so free England from the bombardment of fire it had been suffering since 1940. Born in Brantford, August 19, 1914, he was educated at Dufferin School and the Collegiate Institute. He was chosen by the Brantford Board of Parks Management to take a special course in gardening at the Ontario Agricultural College, Guelph, and later spent some time in the employ of the local Board. He also worked at the Slingsby Manufacturing Company. Enlisting in the R.C.A.F., in December, 1940, he was trained as an air gunner at Brandon, Macdonald and Winnipeg, Man. He was posted overseas in the autumn of 1941 and then saw three years of service. After 29 operations he returned to Canada on leave in May, 1944, but soon returned to take up his duties with the 405th R.C.A.F. Pathfinder Squadron. He was a member of St. Paul's Anglican Church, and as a youngster, was interested in the Boy Scout movement. He was also a member of the Y.M.C.A. and enjoyed swimming. While in England he was married, on December 3, 1943, to Miss Joan Elsie Williams, Bridgend, Wales.
