Steed, Thomas Walter

Dvr. Thomas Walter Steed, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Steed, Burford, lost his life in England in a motorcycle accident on April 9, 1943, while on special duties as a dispatch rider attached to his unit's headquarters' staff. His machine struck an open manhole and he was flung 30 feet into the air and fatally injured. He was buried with full military honors in Brookwood Cemetery, Surrey, England, and his two brothers, Sam and Charles, both of the Canadian Army, were among the pallbearers. Enlisting in the R.C.A.S.C., in November, 1941, he was only 16 years of age at the time. He wanted desperately to share in the contribution his family was making in the Second Great War in sending four other sons into the Army. He was trained in Toronto and Camp Borden and left for England in April, 1942. Born in Brantford, May 30, 1925, he was educated at the Burford Public School. He was a member of Trinity Anglican Church, Burford, and was interested in all community hockey and baseball and was active in the Boy Scouts.
