Barrett, Douglas Joseph

Brantford lost many of its young men in the bitter battle that raged in the Caen sector of France during the summer of 1944, and on July 25, it claimed the life of Spr. Douglas Joseph Barrett. Coming to Brantford in 1937, Spr. Barrett, who was 25 years of age, found employment at H. M. Clubine and Company, Ltd., where he worked until leaving for Waterous Limited, eight months before he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Artillery, on November 16, 1942. After three months' service, he was transferred to the Royal Canadian Engineers. His training carried him to the most western Province, to Chilliwack, B.C., and by the time he sailed overseas, he had been in seven of the nine Provinces and had actually travelled through an eighth, Saskatchewan. He had only been out of the country a short time when he moved into action against the enemy and met his death. While in Brantford he was a member of St. Mary's Church. He resided with his aunt, Mrs. W. Rose.
