Allen, Edsel Herbert

Sgt. Edsel Herbert Allen left his St. George home on January 7, 1940. In the same summer he was with that brave force of Canadians who barely missed being trapped in France at the time when that country surrendered. Then he began the intensive training that was to lead him to Sicily and then to Italy, where on May 22, 1944, he gave his life on the battlefield. Sgt. Allen's courage and bravery under fire were qualities that inspired his men and were in keeping with the fine traditions of gallantry established by his regiment, the famed 48th Highlanders of Canada. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Allen, he had many friends, gained during his days at the Public and Continuation Schools and in association with the members of the St. George Baptist Church.
