Carter, Jack Dellmer

Sgt. Jack Dellmer Carter took part in the historic invasion of Sicily on July 10, 1943, and in so doing, made the supreme sacrifice. He was mortally wounded on that date and died two days later on the Hospital Ship St. David. Sgt. Carter was one of Brantford's finest athletes and his death, at the age of 25 years, caused deep regret throughout the city. He was born here, the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Carter, 223 Park Ave., and had always reflected great credit upon his parents. As a boy he attended King George and Alexandra Schools and then went on to the Collegiate Institute and Vocational School. His leisure time interest was centred on spoils, and he was prominent in baseball, softball and hockey circles. He will be remembered as an exceptionally able catcher and an excellent goalkeeper. He was on the Brantford Cordage team when it won the City Hockey League Championship. He worked at the Cockshutt Plow Company, Ltd. Enlisting for active service with the 2/10 Dragoons, on June 26, 1942, he was trained at Niagara-on-the-Lake, Camp Borden, and Debert, and was then sent overseas on December 19, 1942. He was then transferred to the Royal Canadian Regiment. Sgt. Carter is now lying at rest in the Sousse Military Cemetery in Tunisia.
