Johnston, Ernest Carl

W.O. 2 Ernest Carl Johnston, elder son of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Johnston, 187 Mount Pleasant Road, a Canadian attached to the R.A.F., left England on a bombing mission on March 30, 1944. His plane was in a mammoth raid on Frankfurt, Germany, and it was a memorable and tragic night both for the enemy and the Allies. From it, 96 planes failed to return. W.O. Johnston's parents learned later that he had been buried at Udenbreth, on the west bank of the Rhine River, near Frankfurt. Born in Brantford on April 3, 1922, Ernest attended Farringdon Public School and then the Collegiate Institute and Vocational

School, graduating with his senior matriculation. While at school he was a member of the Glee Club, but his real hobby was reading and he pursued this interest with quiet enthusiasm. In March, 1942, at the age of 19, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force, and after training at Toronto, Belleville and Jarvis, graduated as a bombardier from Mont Joli in December. He was moved overseas during the next month. He had completed more than a year's service there when his death occurred.
