Bury, James Edward

Sto. 1/C James Edward Bury, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Bury, 166 Brock St., had been on convoy duty for over two and a half years before he transferred to the minesweeper, H.M.C.S. Guysborough, and on his first voyage aboard this ship lost his life on March 18, 1945, when the Guysborough was lost in the Bay of Biscay. Sto. Bury had begun his naval career nearly four years previous, in September, 1941. He went directly from Brantford to Halifax and, after about six months' training there, was transferred to St. John's, Newfoundland, from where he went to sea. Born in Brantford on November 6, 1920, James attended Major Ballachey School and the Brantford Collegiate Institute and Vocational School. He then worked until his enlistment at the Cockshutt Plow Company, Ltd. A member of St. Jude's Anglican Church, he also sang in the choir. Fond of outdoor sports, he followed hockey, football and baseball with keen interest.
