Hewings, Edward John (Ted)

During the Second Great War, among the victories which cost the Allies most dear was Cassino, Italy, where the enemy had an extremely strong position, the breaking of which demanded many lives. Among the Canadians of the Perth Regiment who made the supreme sacrifice in this great effort was Pte. Edward John (Ted) Hewings, younger son of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Hewings, 8 Tom St., who died on April 21, 1944, and was, laid to rest where he fell in battle. Pte. Hewings had enlisted in October, 1942, in the Canadian Army Service Corps and was trained at Peterborough, Camp Borden and Woodstock. He was transferred to the 48th Highlanders and sailed overseas with that unit, June 29, 1943. Just a brief time before his death he went to the Perth Regiment. Born March 4, 1922, Ted was educated at Bellview School and the Brantford Collegiate Institute. Like a surprisingly large number of Brantford boys who followed their fathers' professions, Pte. Hewings, when he left school, began, under his father's guidance, to learn the art of tailoring. He left the shop to enlist in the Army. Pte. Hewings was a member of Trinity Anglican Church, and when in his teens, was a Boy Scout.
