Czach, Joseph

Pte. Joseph Czach, 24-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Czach, 10 Sydenham St., died on his way to hospital near Ortona, Italy, on April 16, 1944. He was with the 48th Highlanders of Canada. Born in Poland, on May 17, 1920, Joseph came to Canada with his parents when he was 16 years of age and with his family settled in the Burford district. For a short time he attended the Burford Public School and then worked on a tobacco farm. He was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Brantford. In May, 1941, at the age of 21, Pte. Czach enlisted with the 1st Battalion, Dufferin and Haldimand Rifles, and trained at Niagara-on-the-Lake and Nanaimo. He was moved overseas early in 1943 and there transferred to the 48th Highlanders. The young soldier saw service in England, North Africa with the British 8th Army, Sicily and Italy. Although his stay in the community was brief, Pte. Czach had a large number of friends and he was a member of a family which made large and whole-hearted contributions to the cause of freedom. He had three brothers, Ted, of the Canadian Army, Stanley, of the Polish Navy, and Walter, of the Merchant Marines, each of whom served overseas.
