Mavin, John William

Pte. John William Mavin, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Mavin, 134 Murray Street, was killed in action at Orbec, France, on August 24, 1944, while with the Toronto Scottish Regiment. Pte. Mavin had a good service record, enlisting as soon as the 1st Battalion Dufferin and Haldimand Rifles was mobilized in July, 1940. He trained with his unit at Niagara-on-the-Lake and on the Western Coast and spent nine months in Newfoundland. He went overseas in May, 1943. Now Pte. Mavin is buried at Orbec. Born in Northumberland, England, February 4, 1904, he came to Canada with his parents in 1929 and lived in the Mount Pleasant district. He was an Anglican and worked as a farmer for eight years on a Burford Townline farm. Pte. Mavin's family achieved a Brant

County record for service during the war, six other brothers being members of the Armed Forces. They are Pte. Robert, Pte. Clarence, Cpl. Wilfred, C.S.M. Albert, Sgt. George and C.S.M. Harry.
