Anderson, Leonard Melvin

Pte. Leonard Melvin Anderson, grandson of Mrs. Georgina Ware, 188 Murray Street, with so many others of the Highland Light Infantry of Canada, died in the great attack on Buron, one of the key defenses of Caen, France, on July 8, 1944. The enemy fire was very heavy and according to his platoon officer, Pte Anderson's courage was an inspiration to many of the newer men in the unit in helping them through such an ordeal. Born in Orillia, February 14, 1922, Leonard was brought to Brantford by his parents. He attended Central and Alexandra Schools and then went on to the Collegiate Institute and Vocational School. Later he found employment at Scarfe and Company, Ltd. He attended Wellington Street United Church and was a member of the Dufferin and Haldimand Rifles. He enjoyed baseball, hunting and fishing. During the four years he spent overseas, his mother, Mrs. Violet Anderson, passed away.
