Tate, John Chapple

F/O John Chapple Tate had made 43 operational trips with the Demon Squadron, the first R.C.A.F. Squadron with the Coastal Command when he returned to Canada only to lose his life on October 14, 1942, on an anti-submarine patrol along the St. Lawrence River. The needless tragedy deeply affected his friends who felt that not only had the Air Force lost a valuable and efficient officer, but the community, a fine citizen. A member of a well-known Paris family, F/O Tate attended Paris Public and High Schools and was a member of St. James' Anglican Church. He was employed by the Gypsum, Lime and Alabastine, Canada, Ltd. Interested in the town activities he was a sports enthusiast and was also a member of the Odd Fellows. Enlisting in the R.C.A.F., on July 22, 1940, he trained at Regina and Montreal and graduated as a wireless air gunner from Jarvis in 1941. With full R.C.A.F. honors he was buried in the Paris Cemetery. His widow and daughter, Eleanor, now reside at 94 Waterloo Court, Brantford.
