Tween Club - Graphic Novels
Welcome to BPL’s Tween Club - online! Since we can’t meet up this summer in the library we decided to bring Tween Club to you at home. This space will be dedicated to sharing everything we had planned for our 8-12 year old community right here. This summer, expect to discover:
- recommended Middle Grade and YA reads & book talks
- links to cool sites and articles to check out
- fun activities to do alone or with the family
- DIY crafts to create at home
- challenges to share your love of reading
We can’t officially start our Tween Club online without making sure that everyone has signed up for Summer Reading. All signed up? Great! Let’s chat about some books to spark your reading over July and August, which will help you avoid the “summer slide”.
Read a Graphic Novel
We get a lot of requests for graphic novels like Raina Telgemeier’s Smile. We understand the phenomenon - this series is awesome and we love it too. Graphic novels are engaging, visually beautiful and help improve literary skills. Reluctant readers flock to graphic novels and often become life long readers because of its accessible format. Graphic novels appeal to all ages and cover many genres, including classics, contemporary, fantasy and mystery. If you want to add some new graphic novels to your summer TBR (that's short for "To Be Read"), start here:
- Becoming Brianna by Terri Libenson
- Doodleville by Chad Sell
- Stepping Stones by Lucy Knisley
- Yorick & Bones by Jeremy Tankard
- The Crossover by Kwame Alexander
- When Stars are Scattered by Victoria Jamieson
- Bug Boys by Laura Knetzger
- New Kid by Jerry Craft
- Phoebe and her Unicorn by Dana Simpson
- Monster Mayhem by Christopher Eliopoulous
Don’t forget to also join our Tween Book Club hosted on our Slack page. This online club provides a safe space for tweens to discuss Smile and any other graphic novel you’re currently reading on the Graphic Novel channel. Interested in other books? No worries, you can discuss those too!
Create Your Own Graphic Novel
Interested in creating your own graphic novel? Try using a comic strip generator online or simply print the templates below. Have fun!
- Use "My Summer Adventures" as a writing prompt
- Print off several of these multi-panel templates: 6 panels; 7 panels; 8 panels; 10 panels
We would love to see your comic book creations! If you’d like your art shared on BPL’s social media, please e-mail our Tween Programmer Liana at lflumiani@brantfordlibrary.ca
Please don’t hesitate to forward any questions or comments related to Tween Club and the Tween Book Club directly to Liana - she’s looking forward to hearing from you. In addition to developing unique programs for tweens, Liana is responsible for the Young Adult and Graphic Novel collections at the library. She’s passionate about reader’s advisory and can’t wait to recommend your next book and new favourite author!
