World of the Internet - Learning During Lockdown

Every week during the lockdown Brantford public library staff have tried to find interesting and unique online resources to keep you entertained, educated and informed. For adults, we chose a theme and provide you with multiple online and in-library resources. You can find all adult home based activities here. In the process of doing so, we found some websites that didn’t quite fit into a single theme. They range from educational and fun to unique and strange. These websites will definitely keep you busy.

Radio Garden – Want to know what’s playing on Fusion Life Radio in Johannesburg, South Africa? Check out Radio Garden where you can listen to radio stations live around the world. Just choose a city or scroll the map and find all the radio stations in that area.

Radiooooo - Similar to Radio Garden only Radiooooo allows for users to listen to music from anywhere and from any time period.

Internet live stats – This site will give you live statistics of how many people are using the internet at this very moment.

Stellarium - This free app (accessible via desktop) will allow you to view the night sky from anywhere in Canada.

Chrome Experiments - This is one of our favourite sites. It shows a representation of the galaxy with stars inside it. You can take a tour which starts from the Sun and takes you to the outer edges of the galaxy while teaching you valuable insights in between.

SuperCook – This site will allow you to input the ingredients already in your kitchen and give you recipes to create with just those ingredients.

Mental Floss - Mental Floss is a website which tells you the hidden stories behind the popular happenings around the world. They cover everything from science to history to technology to pop culture.

The Moth – This is a story telling site where real people tell stories of their lives from all over the world.

Wait But Why – This site deals with news and other life related content told in a brilliantly hilarious way.

Documentary Heaven – This site gives you access to hundreds of documentaries free online.

Fun sites to explore with kids

Good Tricks – Ever wonder how magicians perform their tricks? This site will provide you with written and tutorials on how to recreate some of the most interesting tricks.

Little Alchemy 2 – This is a creation game that is great for older kids and teens. You start off with 4 basic elements: Earth, Fire, Water, and Air. The goal is to create as many different materials and objects as possible. For example, earth and air will form dust. The more things you create the more challenging the game gets; it is a great way to learn. Create all 720 items!
